Seven browser extensions that save money at online retailers

With the Christmas season closing in, a large chunk of organised Britons could be starting to shop for presents, especially with warnings there may be a shortage of a variety of products this year.

Millions may opt to go down the online route, either to buy some presents, or maybe even all of them and with it comes the chance to enter discount codes that offer savings.

When shopping online, many will load up their virtual shopping basket before disappearing down a rabbit hole of trying to find a voucher code that works.

But to make cutting costs easier, there are now a number of smarter browser extensions that automatically apply discounts to shoppers online hauls.

Customers doing their online shopping can use browser extensions showing discounts

Others show customers where they could get products for the cheapest possible price.

To help users save money, This is Money takes a look at some of the best discount add-ons available.

All are available free to download on Google Play or as a Chrome extension. It is also important to note many will only work on desktop browsers and not on mobiles.

1. Pouch

Featured on Dragon’s Den, Pouch is a browser extension offering discount code add-ons with the promise to give customers exclusive deals on over 3,000 websites.

These includes Sainsbury’s, eBay, Amazon, Game, Tui and Tesco.

It works by automatically applying any available discounts on a site the customer is browsing. Consumers can also apply multiple voucher codes in one click.

Pouch also offers points with customers receiving them when shopping with certain retailers. One pence is equal to one point.

Once customers have 1,500 points, they can be exchanged for gift cards from a variety of stores.

Some will start doing their Christmas shopping soon as many products will be in short supply

2. Honey

Honey is another discount add on extension and it claims to have 17million members already.

Shoppers install the extension and Honey will show coupon codes before you checkout.

Currently it has discount codes for more than 30,000 shops and also offers a reward programme called Honey Gold where users can get a £10 gift card for every 1,400 Gold points they collect.

Customers can also add items to a ‘drop list’ if they’re not ready to purchase yet. If Honey detects a price drop at that store, it will notify the customer.

It claims the average discount is 17.9 per cent with users making an annual saving of £102.

3. Amazon Assistant

This could be one of the handiest tools on the list considering the millions of people who use Amazon everyday.

Users can shop and compare prices on the site with the Assistant adding a ‘low price’ badge on good value items.

It also lets users see how the cost of items have changed over a 30 day period with its price tracker.

Another benefit is that it enables customers to see if an item is cheaper on Amazon compared to other websites.

Shoppers will get access to their Amazon Lists wherever they are on the internet, allowing them to search for and add any items that they need with ease.

Amazon Assistant said new deals are added every day.

There are a range of discounts available for those who choose to do their shopping online

4. Pricescout

Pricescout compares prices on items you are shopping for and finds discount codes to save you money.

When you are viewing a product in your web browser, Pricescout works by automatically scanning over 21,000 stores for lower prices and will let you know who has the lowest price on the item you’re viewing.

Customers don’t have to click anything and they won’t need to open a new tab and go to a price comparison site.

It also stays hidden when customers are not shopping and will only appear when it has found coupons for the store you are viewing or price comparisons on the item you are viewing.

5. Piggy

Piggy works much the same as Pouch and Honey, offering shoppers automatic vouchers up to 70 per cent off at over 6,000 stores.

Not only does it give customers coupons to save, it also offers cashback on a number of products from the retailers.

This includes WH Smith, JD Sports, New Look and Argos.

Another benefit is receiving money off and cashback when booking a number of hotels online including Booking.com, Hotels.com and Expedia.

6. Minty

Minty is a free browser extension that automatically finds and applies the best voucher codes at checkout with discounts from over ‌3,000 ‌online stores and save on your online purchases.

It will also compare prices across multiple websites and finds customers the lowest price to buy.

Minty can also tell consumers when products they are hoping to buy are back in stock, sending an alert when they’re then available.

7. DealFinder by Voucher Codes

Voucher Codes, which gives customers money off retailers and restaurants, has now introduced a DealFinder.

The extension automatically flags when one of VoucherCodes’ thousand of exclusive discounts is applicable to the things you’re shopping for, and applies the saving for you directly at the checkout.

Not only are clothing retailers included but also travel sites such as Tui.

VoucherCodes says it adds more than 70,000 offers every month and has 8.9million members.
